Darton State College evacuates building for unattended backpack

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A building at Darton State College was evacuated Monday afternoon for about an hour after a suspicious backpack was reported in a bathroom.

About 12:30 Darton State officials ordered the J building evacuated after a student noticed an unattended black backpack under the sink in a men's bathroom on the first floor.

Darton Police called in the bomb disposal unit from the Marine Base.

Their bomb detecting dog sniffed the backpack and did not alert.

The bag had only notebooks in it.

The building returned to normal at 1:40.

Darton State College spokesperson Tracy Goode said "I'm sure that there was some disruption. It is finals week this week. So many of our students just hung around in the parking lot watching everything unfold."

Darton State College Police Chief Jim Brackin said "We do have a name for the book bag. I will be following up on that. And find out exactly when it was left in there and why it was left in there."

While never mentioning the Boston Marathon tragedy, Darton State officials say they didn't hesitate to evacuate the building as a precaution to safeguard their students and faculty.
