Sumter Co. woman dies in house fire

SUMTER COUNTY, GA -

The state fire marshal's office is investigating a deadly house fire in Sumter County.

Firefighters tried to rescue the 73-year-old woman from her burning mobile home Sunday morning, but it was too late.

It was on the porch of this mobile home on Highway 27 east where state fire investigators believe a deadly blaze started Sunday morning. It was a neighbor who spotted the smoke.

"He noticed the smoke coming through the woods. He walked down there and noticed the home was on fire," said Lt. James Hart of the Sumter County Fire Dept.

Hart said the call came in around 8:40 with word that the 73-year-old homeowner might still be inside.

"Three of our firefighters went in through the backdoor and located our victim in the kitchen area and moved her outside the house."

But it was too late. Vickie Glover died at the scene. It's the second fatal house fire in the county in less than a year.  "We had another one on R. W. Jones Road in which we lost a life," Hart said.

Hart says there were smoke detectors inside the home but it's unclear if they alerted the victim. That's still under investigation by the state fire marshal's office.

The body of the 73-year-old Glover will be taken to the state crime lab for autopsy. There's no word on when the state fire marshals investigation will be complete.     Eight trucks and 23 firefighters responded to the fire.  It took about 10 minutes to get it under control.
