Shirley Sherrod holds book signing in Albany

An Albany woman and civil rights advocate held a book signing and presentation Sunday.

Shirley Sherrod talked about her new book, "The Courage to Hope: How I Stood Up to the Politics of Fear." She spoke about her life's work during the event, which was put on by the Albany Civil Rights Institute and Southwest Georgia Project for Community Education.

Sherrod was an active participant in the 1960s civil rights struggles in southwest Georgia.  She was also forced out of her job with the U-S Department of Agriculture after a blogger posted excerpts of a speech she made that made her appear racist.

"I've told my story over and over to people through the years and everyone has said to me, you should write a book. So to actually get it done and be able to share it with people here, I have a good feeling," said Sherrod.

Sherrod says a movie will may be in the future. And our very own, Karla Heath-Sands was the moderator in a discussion before the book signing.
