Overnight fire leaves family without a home

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An overnight fire leaves an Albany family without a home Sunday. The fire destroyed most of the home on Lovers Lane Road in Albany. It's the second time it caught fire in a week.

The Hancock family is trying to salvage what's left from this home they were renting. It took firefighters almost 4 hours to put out the blaze. Fire officials say they arrived on the scene at 2:13 a.m. and left at 5:56 a.m.

Late Sunday afternoon, smoke was still coming out from the structure.

The Hancock's were not at home at the time and were notified by a friend that their home was on fire.

"It just knocked the breath out of me. I just couldn't believe it. Totally devastated. I mean we were trying to get everything set, back to some kind of normal. Just speechless, just didn't know what to say," said Ryann Hancock.

This is not the first fire at 128 Lovers Lane Road. Ryann says the house caught fire and was slightly damaged last Thursday. They were not home for that one either.

The renters say they plan to stay in a hotel until they can find somewhere else to go.

Ryann says when she and her husband got to the home, the fire was already out. She says things could have been worse.

"To where we thought there was a little bit of hope, but I just thank God that we're okay and that me, husband and son were not here. So I'm thankful for that," said Ryann Hancock.

The Hancock's didn't have any renters insurance. Fire officials are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.

Fire officials estimate the damages to the home are $49,000. The Hancock's had been staying in a hotel since the first fire, last Thursday.
