WILCOX CO., GA (WALB) -

Some Wilcox County high school students made history Saturday night with their school's first student sponsored integrated prom.

More than 50 high school students attended the prom at the Community Clubhouse in Cordele. They were all smiles as they watched all of their hard work pay off. We first told you about the prom last month as students were holding fundraisers to raise money for the event. Students also created a facebook page to get the word out. Organizers say the turnout was better than expected.

"A lot of people showed up, a lot of people that I didn't think were coming, they showed up, supported us. A lot of family members came and watched us walk. And a lot of people that were iffy about it at first, they came and supported us too. So we're thankful for that too," said Quanesha Wallace, who helped organize the event.  "Our class kind of stuck together with this, because you know we needed a change."

"So I guess one day in our mind it just struck, hey you know what, it's time to do away with that. We don't have a black class and a white class, we have one class, so it's time to have one prom, one football team, one math class. I don't think it was really anything specific, I think maybe last year we were getting ready for prom and we all decided then, this black and white prom stuff has got to go," said Ethan Roundtree, who helped organize the event.

Students were introduced before the dinner and dance. Seniors say they're happy to leave this tradition behind for future classes and they hope it continues.

In the past, students would sponsor separate white and black proms. The school did not sponsor a prom this year.
