Protecting Senior Citizens

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A Dougherty County woman urges other seniors to beware of caregivers in their homes. And South Georgia Prosecutors say they are seeing an alarming increase in elder abuse and thefts by caregivers.

87-year-old Viola Prather says she was hurt financially and emotionally by a trusted caregiver.

46-year-old Patricia Glenn was indicted this week on 32 counts of transaction card fraud and exploitation of an elderly person. Investigators say this surveillance video shows Glenn using Prather's ATM card.

Prosecutors say Glenn stole more than $7,000 before she was caught. Prather hopes her case will protect others.

"Yes, I would like to warn them be careful. Who you get, because you never know," said Viola Prather. "She hurt me. She hurt me, because when you think a person is caring for you. Then you find out she is your enemy behind your back. It's not good."

Glenn avoided arrest for months but is now in the Dougherty County jail with no bond. She could face ten years in prison if convicted.

Prather says she hopes that she will recover some of her stolen money and hopes her warning will prevent other senior citizens from losing theirs.
