THOMAS COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

Georgia leads the nation in bus stop deaths and injuries.

One south Georgia school system is working to change that.

The Thomas County School System installed exterior cameras on school busses this week.

Their purpose is to catch drivers who don't stop when the bus stop arm and amber lights are displayed.

"We receive probably three or four calls a week from our bus drivers who report that cars have passed them while there stop arm was activated. And of course they are always concerned about the safety of their students. And it's often difficult for the driver to get a good description of the vehicle," said Superintendent Dr. Dusty Kornegay.

The company Red Flex Student Guardian provides the cameras and keeps evidence files free of charge to Thomas County.

If the Thomas County Sheriff's Office issues a citation, the company receives a portion of the fine.
