Albany teacher helps student avoid scam

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A scam alert from an Albany teacher helped one of his students avoid a social media con.

The teen told Westover High School teacher and Coach Kevin Fretwell about an offer he got on Instagram.

A scammer asked the student to put $200 on a Green Dot Money card then send it to him.

The con artist claimed to have a way to change the card to $2,000 which he promised to split with the student.

Fretwell says the teen almost went through with it.

"I'm afraid the kids in the community are going to fall for it and then some random guy who we don't even know if this is the right picture of him or not on instagram, if that's even the actual guy, is going to be stealing money from these kids that don't have the money to give up," said Fretwell.

Fretwell wants to warn other students and parents to be on the lookout for the scam so they don't fall for it.
