FITZGERALD, GA (WALB) -

A South Georgia community will honor Martin Luther King, Junior by dedicating a road after him.

A portion of Ben Hill Drive in Fitzgerald will be dedicated in honor of the late civil rights leader.

Earlier this month, the Ben Hill County Commission approved the honor for the county portion of the road. Monday, the Fitzgerald City Commission voted 8 to 1 to do the same.

The official name of the road won't change since it's a state route but signs will go up declaring it Martin Luther King Memorial Drive.

"We've had phone calls from people thanking us and people that's been through our office. I think it's well received in the community," said Cam Jordan, City Development Director.

The General Assembly must give its approval next year before the signs go up.
