ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Technical College students now have a better chance of earning the HOPE Grant.

Wednesday, Governor Nathan Deal signed a bill that lowers the HOPE GPA requirement for technical college students.

Deal says the new bill will strengthen the state's workforce.

Albany Technical College officials say it's good news, especially for non-traditional students.

"Hope pays about 72% of their tuition, which can run up to about $800 per semester. If you don't have a job and you living on unemployment that makes a very big difference," said Financial Aid Director Kenneth Wilson

Two years ago, the state raised the GPA requirement to 3.0 to save money.

Recent growth in Lottery revenue allowed the state change it back.
