LEE COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

Some nonprofit agencies in Southwest Georgia are receiving a little extra help thanks to a grocery store and its employees.

Publix Super Markets Inc. presented the United Way of Southwest Georgia with a check for $28,400 towards their annual campaign.  In addition to the corporate contribution, employees have pledged an additional $36,755.

The funds will be given to partner agencies in Southwest Georgia that provide program services in education, health, basic needs, and income.

"With the economic changes and conditions that we've been under for several years, it's imperative that non-profits have our support. So the united way of Southwest Georgia is a great mechanism for people to support one agency that we can then support 27 different non-profits so every dollar stretches and goes a long way," said LaKisha Bryant Bruce, the CEO and President of the United Way of Southwest Georgia.

"It really shows the heart of our associates, the fact that they care to give back, even when they face the same economic times that we all face. I mean the dollar doesn't go as far as it use to. And the fact that they're willing to give back from their paycheck every week to support their community really shows the heart of who we are and what we're all about," said Keith Gilbert, the Publix District Manager.

While United Way of Southwest Georgia serves 13 counties, this money will be distributed to programs in Dougherty and Lee County.
