Georgia leaders lower BUI limits

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Some south Georgians who spend a lot of time on the water appreciate a new boating safety law Governor Nathan Deal signed Tuesday.

The Jake and Griffin Prince BUI law, named in honor of two young brothers killed in a boat crash in Lake Lanier, will lower the legal blood-alcohol limit of boat operators to 0.08, the same limit for motor vehicle drivers.

One fisherman said boat operators should have designated drivers and hopes the law will make his favorite past time safer.

"People are driving these big boats and skiing and stuff. I mean if you've got two big boats coming head on and they're drinking, it's like having a head-on collision on the road," said Dale Cross, Boat Owner & Fisherman.

Georgia was one of only eight states that had a higher blood-alcohol content limit for boating than driving.

All of the boaters we spoke with Wednesday were in favor of the lowered blood alcohol limit.

The law will also require all vessel operators born in 1998 or after to complete boater safety education courses. It also raises the life jacket requirement for all kids up to age 13.
