Missing teen due in FL court on child sex charges

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

We now know a missing Lowndes County man investigators believe faked his death faces child sex charges in Florida.

Lowndes County investigators are still trying to find 19-year-old Valdosta State University student Nathan Wilkins, after a suicide note and his clothes were found near the Little River.

Bay County, Florida officials tells us Wilkins is due in court May 6th.

Last June, he was arrested and charged with traveling to meet a minor for sexual activity and solicitation of a minor via the internet.

Yesterday, Lowndes investigators called off their search of the Little River after getting a tip that Wilkins is alive, but they are still looking for him.

"We're looking for a missing person. Regardless of his motive for being missing, we're looking for a missing person. That's our objective; find him and make sure he's safe," said Lt. Stryde Jones, Lowndes County Sheriff's Office.

Wilkins pleaded not guilty to the charges in Florida.

Lowndes investigators say they have not had any communication with Wilkins and have not charged him with any crime.
