ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An Albany school slated for closure won big after their students' hard work keeping the city clean.

During Wednesday's school board meeting two students and representatives from Magnolia Elementary were given a $500 check from McDonalds.  They won the system wide competition from Keep Albany Dougherty Beautiful to recycle the most phone books.  They collected more than 9,000.

"It was important to do for everybody to actually be involved with collecting the phone books.  So I'm very happy that all the students at Magnolia Elementary school actually were involved in collecting the phone books," said Elexus Walters, a 5th grader at Magnolia Elementary.

The student advisor says since Magnolia Elementary is closing, the money will go towards end of the year events for the students.
