Gov. Deal signs boater safety bill

North Georgia saw a deadly summer on the water last year with three lives taken after two boating accidents at Lake Lanier.

To help prevent any more tragedies, Governor Nathan Deal signed a bill Tuesday at the Holiday Marina at Lake Lanier to lower blood-alcohol limits and bring better boater safety education to the public.

The new blood-alcohol level limit for boaters now match Georgia's current driving limit at .08, from the previous .10.

The lowered limit is part of the Jake and Griffin Prince BUI law to honor two brothers killed in a boating crash on the lake last summer.

Penalties have now also been increased for anyone caught boating while intoxicated.

The Kyle Glover Education law section of the bill requires a boater safety education course for those operating motorized vessels that were born since January 1, 1998, for R&B artist Usher's stepson who also died last year after a personal watercraft accident.

13-year-olds and under are also now mandated to wear a life jacket on a boat.

A press release from the bill signing ceremony yesterday quoted Governor Deal saying,"if you're too drunk to drive an automobile, you are too drunk to drive a boat."

The new legislation will also lower the BAC limit for hunting under the influence to .08.
