Airport supports keeping control tower open

The Aviation Commission in Albany is fighting to keep the control tower open at the Southwest Georgia Regional Airport.

The monthly aviation commission meeting was held Monday. Members discussed ways to keep the tower open. The air traffic control tower is one of nearly 150 that are scheduled to close because of FAA cuts, which took effect Sunday.

Commission members say they support the idea of extending air traffic control services for another year.

"We need an extra set of eyes out there telling pilots where to go and I think that's the thing that we need to carry away from this. It's not only an economic issue. It's a safety issue," said Yvette Aehle, Airport Director.

Airport officials will meet with city commissioners at their meeting on May 7 to discuss their proposal of keeping the air traffic control tower open.
