School closures get hearings

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The first of several meetings on the school closures in Dougherty County started Monday night at Alice Coachman Elementary school.

It's one of nine, that school officials are holding to help parents and students adjust to the closing of Sylvester Road Elementary, Dougherty Middle School and re-purposing Magnolia Elementary.

The closures impacts the entire district and these meetings are being held in schools receiving new students.

"We're asking parents new to a school to go into the new school and get to know the leadership, the principal, the teaching staff and see the school and just get more comfortable with the surroundings and a new place," said R.D. Harter of the DCSS.

School board members voted on the cost saving plan last month. The school closings will take affect for the upcoming school year.

The next meeting will be Tuesday at 6:30 at Live Oak Elementary.
