Lowndes County celebrates Earth Day

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

In honor of Earth Day Lowndes County leaders planted trees on the historic courthouse lawn and they're asking the community to get involved and recycle. Today also marked the first event on the northside of the courthouse in over 50 years since the demolition of the annex.

Three hard wood trees will grow next to the Lowndes County Courthouse, which many in the community say its an improvement to the old annex that was torn down.

"With the annex removed it truly represents the courthouse that we all love and know so well," said Chairman Bill Slaughter.

He says with the annex gone the city and county can hold bigger outdoor events in downtown Valdosta. "Part of removing the annex was to create more green space here at the courthouse and along with Earth Day falling right in line I thought it was a perfect idea."

County leaders are also asking the community to get involved in honor of Earth Day.

Until Tuesday, you'll see a big dumpster right along Patterson Street. The county is asking residents to bring in their old electronics and recycle them properly.

"We do everything we can to help prevent pollution in the landfill from harming the environment. There's only so much we can do; the county doing this recycling program, it really helps out," said Matthew Parker with Advanced Disposal.

He says it can be dangerous to have old electronics sitting in landfills. "Things like computer screens contain iodine and hazardous gasses and those are all disposed of properly which you can't do yourself, and the plastics are melted down and reused."

And the newly planted trees along Valley Street are a white oak, a red oak, and a hickory tree.
