ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Dougherty County school officials are gearing up for their first meeting with parents about the upcoming school closures.

The first meeting will be held Monday night. Last month, the Dougherty County Board of Education voted to close Sylvester Road Elementary, Dougherty Middle School and re-purpose Magnolia Elementary.

School officials have scheduled nine meetings at different locations. Parents will be informed about where their children will be attending school. Teachers and staff will be on hand to answer questions and concerns from parents.

"We want to ensure them, number one, that their child is going to be safe and it's going to be an orderly process and they'll be okay. That's the primary goal. And to give the specific information about your child will be at this school," said Dr. David Mosley.

The plan will save 2 million dollars a year and 11 million in SPLOST money for renovations needed at the schools on the closure list. Parents in East Albany say it will hurt their community.

The school closings will take affect for the 2013-2014 school year. The first meeting is Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Alice Coachman Elementary School.
