ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Some South Georgia residents braved the chilly weather this morning and walked the streets of Albany to fight for those that are battling breast cancer.

Downtown Albany was flooded with a sea of pink to honor survivors, fighters and those who have lost their battle with breast cancer.

More than 200 people came together to walk six miles around the Flint RiverQuaruim, Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital and Albany State University.

Janet Elliot was inspired to organize this event by a cancer survivor, who is close to her.

"Well, my aunt is a survivor, 10 years survivor. She has been involved in the Susan Komen walks and she has started doing some in Atlanta and they were trying to get in South Georgia and I said we can do it, why not," said Janet Elliot.

Elliot's grandmother, a six year breast cancer survivor is excited to see so many people turn out for a great cause.

"It's very special, I'm not able to walk but Janet is my granddaughter, we come down to support her in the walk," said breast cancer survivor Juanita Dale.

The first year event exceeded all expectations. Organizers want participants to come away with a feeling of team effort and a good spirit.

"I think they were elated and I think they all had a good time. I think they felt like it was a team. It was a good community project for everybody," said Karen Smith.

Karen and Janet are both employees at BMW of Albany and with the amazing turnout, they are planning ahead for next year.

"We're going to double it next year, we want to be able to block off Oglethorpe. Maybe rent the civic center, who knows," Karen Smith.

The money raised on Saturday will help benefit patients at the Carlton Breast Center. Some sponsors include Albany State University and Sam's Club. Over $25,000 was raised for the event.
