Relay For Life goes on despite rainy weather

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Despite the rainy weather, hundreds of cancer survivors and supporters walked together at Darton College for the annual Relay for Life fundraiser, Friday night.

The event helps raise money for cancer research and participants say they wouldn't let the rainy weather stop them.

"It hits home, close to home for a lot of us like relatives and coworkers so that's why we're out here walking in the cold," said walker Tamara Atwater.

"It's great, you got terrible weather and we still got a bunch of folks so it's a good day," said cancer survivor Tara Okan.

Okan is one of the many cancer survivors who showed up to participate, Friday.

She been free of ovarian cancer and says it's a blessing to be out at tonight's event.

"Glad to be alive. You learn things are a lot different after you go through this," said Okan.

Most of the participants in the walk said they were doing it for the future generations.

"We're not doing this for us because we're older. We got to do it for the little kids sitting next to us when we go through chemotherapy. That's one of the reasons we do it, is to get these kids to make it when they're old," said Okan.

Hopefully the money raised Friday can help find a cure to this deadly disease.

"I would love for us to find a cure for cancer. I wouldn't want anyone to go through the hardships of seeing someone die or anything like that," said Atwater.

The walk will be going on until 6 Saturday morning.
