APD gets rid of its horses

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany joins a growing number of cities around the country getting rid of police horses to save money.

The city manager decided to disband the Albany Police Department's mounted patrol earlier this year.

City leaders say taking care of the four horses was expensive, and officers didn't use them enough to make the unit cost effective. Central Services Director Stephen Collier said, "It cost a lot to feed horses and pay veterinarian bills. As I understand from the liability point of it, horses need to be ridden often to be able to operate around humans and crowd management, and we weren't riding them enough, so we had some concerns there."

City leaders tell us the move will save the city about $250,000 a year.

The city auctioned off two horses and returned the other two to the original owners who donated them to APD.
