Two Brooks Co. men charged with animal cruelty

BROOKS CO., GA (WALB) -

A south Georgia animal rescue organization is helping Brooks County law enforcers bring justice to abused animals.

Two Brooks County men were recently charged with animal cruelty. Two of the animals they're accused of mistreating have died.

Six-year-old horse, Quinn, may look malnourished now, but this a huge improvement from just two weeks ago. She was found along with another horse who died from starvation. Brooks County sheriff's investigations have charged owner Darryl Duncan with animal cruelty. And BARC Humane Society is giving Quinn a second chance.

"Anybody that would have any animal and treat them like that doesn't deserve to have an animal," said BARC President Charles Devane. He has spent years taking care of unwanted and neglected animals. He says this is one of the worst animal cruelty cases he's seen.

"They were neglected; this is not something that just happens overnight. This was a contentious ongoing habit that he had of just not caring for them," said Devane.

Devane is holding Quinn on his rescue ranch as evidence for the Brooks County Sheriff's Office until she's ready for adoption.

The other horses have finally accepted Quinn into their heard. And for the first time in her life she's socializing.

Devane also recently had to say goodbye to a dog he took in to rehabilitate. Daniel Mack was charged with animal cruelty by the Quitman Police Department after this dog named Brooks was found starved on his property.

"The dog was tied on a short chain without any food or any water. This was the most emaciated dog I have ever seen before that was still alive," said Devane.

Brooks died last week. Devane says he's thankful local law enforcement is taking a stance on animal cruelty, but he wishes they'd never have to deal with abuse cases like these.

Both of those suspects bonded out of the Brooks County Jail and are awaiting trial.
