BOSTON, GA (WALB) -

People in Boston, Georgia are reaching out to people in Boston, Massachusetts after Monday's attack.

Our Boston hosts a mini-marathon every October.

And while the small town's annual race pales in comparison to the one in its sister city, folks there hope to honor the victims during this year's race.

Boston, Georgia Mayor Danny Groover says Monday's tragic events hit the small south Georgia town especially hard.

"Of course we just feel bad for everybody that was involved and we do feel like we have a connection with our sister city."

Groover says Boston's Mini-Marathon was patterned after the official Boston Marathon.

"I sent a letter to the Mayor of Boston, Mass yesterday expressing our concerns, sympathy, and just let him know that we were thinking of everybody and thinking about what we can do. We just wanted to let them know we are praying for them."

And while the mini-marathon is significantly smaller than the Boston Marathon, Police Chief Ferrell Howell says security will be a bigger topic of discussion this year.

"My thoughts actually did come back to our marathon here. Boston is a small town, but we will be monitoring things closer. I think that's a very small chance that could happen here, but I bet the chief in Boston, Massachusetts probably thought the same thing."

Boston resident Sandi Shaw says her first emotion Monday was grief, but then she had a thought that surprised her.

"Oh I live in Boston, GA so I'm safe. And while I was feeling rather clever about that, this morning we woke up and found out a fertilizer plant blew up in west Texas."

But Shaw says she hopes they have a record turnout in October to show solidarity for those up north.

"I know this year when we have the mini marathon, we'll be thinking about the people in Boston, Massachusetts and very glad to be together and continuing a tradition that has been so much fun for this town."

Groover says he also sent a letter to all of the local churches requesting they have a special prayer on Sunday for the entire city of Boston, Massachusetts.

The Boston Mini-Marathon is run in the last Saturday in October and is organized by the Boston Community Club.
