ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Marine Corps Logistics Base celebrated different cultures that make up our nation's armed forces Thursday.

The ninth annual multi-cultural heritage day included various cultural performances and displays. It gives people of all different backgrounds to celebrate what it means to be an American.

Each of the tents in Boyett Park featured ethnic displays to curious onlookers hoping to learn something new. They're part of a multi-cultural celebration centered around the various backgrounds that make up America's melting pot. This year's theme was celebrating one's uniqueness.

"I think the important part is that we celebrate our diversity. We celebrate our background. We celebrate what's important about what it means to be an American from different parts around the world," said Col. Yori Escalante, Marine Corps Logistics Command Chief of Staff.

Escalante said the celebration is special to him because of his Mexican-American heritage.

The flag was presented and honored by those who defend our nation. Afterwards, various cultural performances entertained crowds, like the bag piper who filled the park with a ceremonial music.

One staff sergeant even dressed as Benazir Bhutto, the eleventh Prime Minister of Pakistan, as part of a skit about inspirational women in history.

"We all embrace each other's uniqueness and understand that our differences are what make us so special," said S. Sgt. Juana Delossantos, Logistics Command Equal Opportunity Advisor.

Marines and civilians alike perused cultural artifacts featured in the Native American displays and the Hispanic tents among others. But one of the more popular tents featured ethnic food, offering various delicacies from around the globe.

Every year features different themes, foods and displays.

"If I could bottle up my passion and distribute it to people, that's what I would do. Because this event is awesome," Delossantos said.

She said Unity Day has become one of the most anticipated celebrations of the year. Delossantos thanked the Marines and volunteers who she described as the backbone in constructing the event.

The celebration was held from 11am to 2pm Thursday, and recognized the contributions off all cultures.
