Gun advocate reacts to squashed expanded background check bill
LEE CO., GA (WALB) -
One South Georgia gun rights advocate agrees with the Senate, after a proposed bill to expand background checks for gun purchases was voted down.
Steven Drew of Georgia Loan and Gun in Lee County says expanded background checks would only affect those who are legally trying to buy a gun and would not deter criminals.
"A person that has something in their background and knows they can't pass a background check is not going to walk into a gun store or gun show where background checks are occurring and pay a fee to have a background check knowing they're not going to pass," said Drew.
He says the best way to combat tragedies such as the Newtown massacre is to improve access to mental health treatment.
