South Georgians react to Boston Bombing

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

All the south Georgians we know of who ran the Boston Marathon are okay following the bombing there.

Shelton Ansley works for UPS in Cairo. Mike Beeman of Tifton was running his 36th Boston marathon.

Christian Hufstetler from Bainbridge and Sean McConnell from Hahira are fine.

Yvette Moore of Valdosta was not able to finish the race. Charlene Pennymon of Americus did finish. April Scruggs of Valdosta crossed the finish line 8-minutes before the blast.

We reported earlier that Dustin Bengston of Tifton, Gregroy Waddell of Bainbridge, and Jose Tongol of Albany ran the race. They all registered, but did not run.

Dr. Tongol is a well-known oncologist at Phoebe's Cancer Center. He couldn't run because of an injury but is in Boston and spent part of Monday at the finish line. Dr. Lane Price says Tongol was key in getting the Albany marathon started.

She said, "To have this happen at the culmination of the marathon of the world. This is the place that people want to run is the Boston. And it's now had this terrible terrible black spot thrown across it. I know this won't be the end of the Boston Marathon." Price has also run a marathon and says to have this happen at the finish line is horrifying.

The Albany marathon is a Boston qualifier. Many runners race here specifically to run a time that's good enough to get them into the Boston race.

Albany marathon director Rashelle Beasley spent much of Monday afternoon checking on runners she knows. One was almost finished when the explosions went off. "One of them was at 25.8 whenever the first explosion came off, from reading on Facebook. And you know, you think about being that close...and you know, it's just heart breaking," Beasley said.

Beasley says she and Albany marathon board members are praying for the marathon runners and the city of Boston tonight.
