Investigators say tax day sees many tax fraud complaints

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

It's tax day.

The deadline to file your income taxes is fast approaching, and Dougherty County Sheriff's Investigators say crooks are still hard at work filing fraudulent tax returns.

They've seen more tax fraud complaints this year than ever.

Crooks steal personal information and file a tax return in that person's name hoping to score a big refund check.

The I-R-S says you need to protect your personal information.

"Be aware that this type of fraud exists," said IRS spokesman Mark Green.  "And most importantly if you don't need to give out your social security number, don't give it out. Because that's where the majority of those surface from. From individuals who are coerced into giving out their social security numbers."

Sheriff's Investigators say they're encouraged that the I-R-S is cracking down on tax fraud scammers.

I-R-S officials say the number of fraud cases nationally have decreased, but sheriff's investigators say they're up in our area.
