Ray City man on the run caught after high speed chase

BERRIEN CO., GA (WALB) -

A man accused of kidnapping and raping a Ray City woman and shooting an Adel man Friday is back in Berrien County tonight after a high speed chase in middle Georgia.

Saturday afternoon, Monroe County deputies spotted 42-year old Charles Heard in a stolen Nissan Altima speeding down I-75.

Heard led officers on a 23-mile chase that ended in Bibb County. Officials say Heard jumped out of the moving car and ran. He was caught quickly.

In Berrien and Cook Counties he's charged with rape, kidnapping, false imprisonment, theft, and aggravated assault.

"We know that he was a dangerous individual and after the high speed chase, before they subdued him, he left the vehicle in gear and almost ran over one of the Monroe County officers there," said Berrien County Sheriff, Anthony Heath.

In Monroe County, Heard is charged with felony fleeing, attempting to elude, felony obstruction, reckless conduct, and traffic violations.

He's now booked in the Berrien County jail.
