Court approves Dougherty Co. school closing plan

Judge Louis Sands says closing two Dougherty County schools and repurposing another will not violate a federal court order, which says schools should be 50% white and 50% black.

That order has been in place for 50 years.  Any changes to district lines and compositions of schools must be reported.

Dougherty County school system attorney Tommy Coleman, says they are one step closer to getting out from that order.  Today Judge Sands told Coleman to contact any attorneys who support the order, to see if they want to proceed in court.

The system filed an appeal 12 years ago saying the order is pointless because it is impossible to follow.
