The lockdown at NC A&T was lifted shortly before 12:30 p.m. Friday. Classes are set to resume at 2 p.m., according to the school website.

The school issued a campus-wide alert Friday morning, with this message on the school website:

*** A black male has been seen carrying a rifle on Campus. The University is on lockdown. Everyone should stay inside, close and lock your doors and windows. ***

The school has more than 10,000 students and more than 2,000 employees.

NC A&T spokeswoman Nettie Rowland said no shots were fired and police have a description of a suspect. The description given is an unknown black man, about 5'11", wearing blue jeans, a blue jacket, a white tshirt, and a blue cap. He was seen near the General Classroom Building, according to the school website.

Several Guilford County Schools were also on lockdown - but do confirm via Twitter the all clear was given and the lockdown has been lifted.

Bennett College was also on lockdown, due to the proximity to A&T.

Police have not yet confirmed there was a gun. No shots were fired.

WBTV is working to learn more information.

It's the second lockdown situation at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in less than 24 hours.

At 11:08 p.m. Thursday, Elizabeth City State University was placed on lockdown after reports of shots fired on campus.

A message went out via the Public Information Emergency Response (PIER) system a few minutes later, at 11:15 p.m. Students were told to remain in their dorm, or return to it immediately.

Residence Hall staff helped secured the dorms while the campus was on lockdown for an hour and 42 minutes.

There were no reports of students hurt. University Police continued to investigate throughout the night and Friday morning, said the shots that were fired came from a non-student who was on campus.

Officers are trying to determine what led to the shooting near a wooded area on the eastern perimeter of campus.

The investigation is ongoing.

There is no indication at this time the lockdown is related to the one Friday morning at NC A&T.
