GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Police have identified the man shot and killed after taking five Gwinnett County firefighters hostage on Wednesday.

According to police, Lauren Holman Brown, 55, faked a heart attack in order to lure medically trained firefighters to his Walnut Grove Way home in an unincorporated part of the county near Suwanee.

He then pointed a gun at them and demanded to have several utilities turned back on.

Police said the firefighters were held in the bedroom and he chose firefighters over police because they would come unarmed.

Police said negotiations with Brown broke down and action had to be swiftly taken in order to save the lives of the firefighters.

Negotiators were convinced that Brown would not release the hostages even if his demands were met.

Roughly 3 1/2 hours after the hostage situation began, police used an explosive to blow the side of the house off.

SWAT officers then used "flash bang" explosives to startle the gunman as they made entry into the room where he was holding the firefighters hostage.

Brown fired at an officer who was struck in the wrist. The officer returned fire, killing Brown.

The firefighters only suffered minor injuries.

A total of six guns were found in the house. Police learned after the situation was over that Brown had ordered firefighters to gather chairs, ropes and tape in order to restrict their movement.

Police said Brown had financial troubles and suffered from a debilitating medical condition. CBS Atlanta News learned Brown's home had fallen into foreclosure and the utilities had been turned off due to nonpayment.

According to Gwinnett County Police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith, Brown was arrested in 2010 for failure to appear.

Neighbors told CBS Atlanta News that Brown lived across the street from his ex-wife and two children.

Police said Brown told his hostages that he wanted his family to be able to witness what was happening and he had been planning the attack for weeks.

CBS Atlanta News will have more information about Brown as it becomes available.
