ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The owner of a closed down Albany nightclub was in court Wednesday trying to reopen his business.

Gilbert Udoto is suing the city to get his alcohol license back for Big Daddy's. City commissioners denied a license renewal in January after police testified about repeated problems, overcrowding and dangerous conditions at the bar.

Udoto said the decision was based on violations he was never notified about. Superior Court Judge Willie Lockette heard his case Wednesday morning.

"I'm confident because there were no grounds for me being closed down. Because we didn't have...those incidents, the incidents that were brought against me were baseless," said Udoto.

Udoto's lawyer claims the city did not follow proper legal procedures in taking away the license. City attorneys say Udoto was given prior notice of violations.

Udoto's attorney will file a brief, and the city will have five days to respond.
