ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Words from a father who lost his young child to abuse set a tone today at the Marine Corps Logistic Base.

In support of Child Abuse Prevention Month, the base held a proclamation ceremony this morning.

The featured speaker was Scott Juceam. Seven years ago his infant daughter died from shaken baby syndrome caused by the family's nanny. He travels the country speaking about the importance of preventing child abuse before it starts.

Base officials agree his message, along with services they provide, will help better protect innocent lives.

"All I really need to do is share the message - Don't shake babies. These people are going to go home today and hug their children a little tighter and they're going to tell their neighbors that they met me and heard the message. And that's what's most important. Don't shake babies," said Juceam.

"We defend those who can't defend themselves. And that's what this is all about, child awareness. Child Abuse Awareness Month is about defending those who are defenseless," said Col. Donald Davis.

The proclamation urges the base community to participate in efforts geared to toward child abuse prevention.
