Andersonville National Historic Site to celebrate National Park Day

ANDERSONVILLE, GA (WALB) -

Volunteers will clean up civil war sites across the nation in celebration of National Park Day Saturday, sponsored by the Civil War Trust.

Visitors to the Andersonville National Historic Site won't just do cleanup work. They'll also help repair and rebuild the park's replica prisoner shelters. The original shelters were built in 1864 and have been replicated over the years.

"Essentially trying to rebuild some of the shelters using some of the same techniques that they did," said Chris Barr, Park Guide. "Now we'll have some modern tools. We're not asking volunteers to come out here and dig things out with cups or anything. But it's a really neat experience for visitors to try to get a sense for how did the prisoners meet their needs."

Barr says the event is also a way for visitors to feel ownership in the park.

The event is from 9am to 3pm, and is open to whoever wants to show up.
