ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Albany Police Gang Unit gave hundreds of shoes to kids in need in the community Friday.

Officers helped kids pick out the right size shoes and try them on at the first Gang Unit Shoe giveaway.

It was clear the excited kids appreciated the gifts. Officers say many of the kids are from families they met during their work. They also used social media to spread the word.

"It started as our intervention, prevention phase, so that we can try to interact with the community and prevent some type of these crimes with the youth, " said Corporal Janel Herring.  "So we decided to give back, and give that community police relationship."

The 250 pairs of shoes were donated by Walmart, Sears, Citi Trends, and individuals. The Gang Unit says they hope to make this an annual event for community kids.
