IRS says file an extension rather than not filing at all

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

You only have ten days left to file your income tax return.

The I-R-S warns you not to panic.

Rushing to meet the deadline can lead to bigger problems, like mistakes on your tax form.

If you haven't filed yet, the I-R-S encourages you to do so electronically.

If you can't finish on time file for a 6-month extension with a form 4868, but don't fail to file by April 15th.

"By filing it will cut down on any additional penalties or interest that may occur for failure to file," said IRS spokesman Mark Green.  "It will not give you additional time to pay, so if you expect to owe, you should send in as much as you can along with that tax return."

Green says the I-R-S still has 27-million dollars in unclaimed refunds owed to 31,000 Georgians who did not file a tax return for 2009.

If they don't file by April 15th of this year, they'll lose the rights to those refunds and the money will become property of the U-S Treasury.
