New hurricane warnings will keep you safer

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The National Hurricane Center is changing how it issues tropical storm and hurricane warnings after criticism in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.

Some people in the northeast say they underestimated Sandy's danger when it hit in October after the center stopped issuing advisories when the storm lost its tropical characteristics.

A new policy announced Thursday means advisories and warnings will continue after storms are technically no longer hurricanes or Tropical storms.

Dougherty County EMA officials say this will better help them warn and prepare residents. They say people should always take the warnings seriously. "If we turn on the sirens and ask you to go in your safe rooms then do it. You can come out and laugh it off afterwards and say oh it just didn't happen, but it's better to be forewarned and safe than to suffer the consequences," said EMA Director Jim Vaught.

The Hurricane Center attributes 72 deaths to Sandy.
