Kiwanis Of Albany donates to SOWEGA Council on Aging

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Kiwanis Club of Albany makes a donation to the SOWEGA Council On Aging Wednesday.

Because of recent state budget cuts, the senior citizen advocates say they need more contributions from the community.

Kiwanis Club President Jim Brackin presents a check to SOWEGA Council Executive Director Kay Hind, but it's not enough to cover the $351,000 the council will lose next fiscal year because of budget cuts. Hind worries that some people who depend on meals on wheels will go hungry without more generous contributions.

"351 thousand dollars," said Hind.  "And it's across the board. You know almost every program is cut some. But nutrition is cut the most. Which I don't understand why they do it that way."

Sequestration cuts are expected to reduce the SOWEGA Council on Aging's operating budget to about 5-million dollars as Hind says the number of seniors they serve increases daily in their 14 Southwest Georgia counties.
