Songfest celebrates cancer survivors

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Fighting cancer can be a long hard battle and for some it can even be deadly. Sunday a south Georgia Church celebrated the survivors through worship and music.

Union Missionary Baptist Church celebrated their cancer survivors with a musical tribute.

The second annual songfest was in honor of George Hicks who was a lead singer in the male choir and died of cancer last year.

American Cancer Society volunteers wants people to remember survivors still need support after they've won their fight with cancer.

"We want them to enjoy more birthdays. The only way we can do that is we come together and were so thankful that Union Baptist decided to become a Relay for Life sponsor and team," said Kathy Culbreth.

The church lit three candles, one for survivors, one for caregivers and the last in memory of those who have passed.

"Cancer has no boundaries. Little folk, big folk, all kind of folk," said Deacon Elijah Richardson.

Deacon Elijah Richardson, who beat cancer, says music is the best therapy. The songfest featured songs that spoke to each person in a different way. Music can help those stricken with cancer forget about their worries and troubles.

"The 'C' word is not the end. I had cancer in 1987. I'm still around to talk about it, feel good about it. God has been good," said Deacon Elijah Richardson.

Pastor of Union Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. Dr. John Severson, is also a cancer survivor. He blessed the church with a song at the end of the event. Organizers hope that the songfest can provide healing for survivors and supporters every year.

Relay for Life for Dougherty and Lee county is April 19th at Darton College.
