ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Most families spent Sunday celebrating Easter at church or at home with Easter egg hunts, but for some families with newborn babies, they spent the day in Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.

Parents are beside their baby or in one case three babies in the NICU and they didn't expect a surprise visit from the Easter Bunny.

"Some seem surprised and they're joyed because most people don't think, you know, they're in the hospital. They don't get to go out and actually enjoy Easter Sunday, so we actually come to them," said Sergeant Chad Kirkpatrick with the Dougherty County Police.

This was Dougherty County Police departments 8th year there to volunteer and come help the Easter Bunny pass out toy bunnies to help the patients celebrate the holiday.

"The babies can't be home with their parents. They can't have like their traditional Easter egg hunt and pictures with the Easter bunny. I think it's really neat that they're coming here and getting pictures done," said Haley Shaw, registered Nurse at Phoebe Putney Hospital.

The bunnies were given to 33 children in the hospital including some toddlers in pediatrics.

DCP says it's their way of giving back to the community and they look forward to the event every year.

"It's been tremendous. Everybody's been joyful and happy to see us and you know, they want us to come back," said Kirkpatrick.

Most of the babies were sleeping during the visit but each family had the chance to get their photo taken as a reminder of the little one's first Easter Sunday.

The toy bunnies each child received today were donated by the non-profit Easter Bunny Foundation.

The organization takes donations to supply toys during Easter week to children's hospitals in thirty three states across the U-S.
