Wilcox Co. students planning integrated prom

WILCOX CO., GA (WALB) -

Some students at Wilcox County High School are busy making plans for prom in April. This year things are going to be a little different.

Students are in the process of coordinating Wilcox County High School first student sponsored integrated prom.

"We realize were making history. Because this has never happened before. So for something like this to come about where we can make a difference or change, it's gonna be valuable to the community. It's really exciting," said Mareshia Rucker.

The senior class is planning the prom themselves, without the help of schools officials.

So far, 50 students have bought tickets to the prom. Saturday, Mareshia Rucker and some of her classmates sold chicken plates to help raise money for their special event. She hopes everyone can get on board in the future.

"Hopefully it rubs off. I feel like they will carry it on and keep doing the same thing so that we won't fall back in the ways we were previously," said Mareshia Rucker.

Students say they will have more fundraiser's every weekend until the week before the prom.

To get the word out, students created a Facebook event page. Kelloggs Racial Healing donated T-shirts for the students.

Parents say they're behind the kids 100 percent and want to continue to see integrated proms in the future.

"I see black, white proms separate gone. I think from this point on they will have an integrated prom," said Toni Rucker.

All the money from the prom will be funded by parents who are willing to let their kids participate and through fundraiser's.

The prom will be held at the Community Club House in Cordele on April 27th.
