Grace Way reaches out to Easter shoppers

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

As customers entered Albany's Winn Dixie today they were greeted with smiling faces and checking out there were hands there to bag and carry their Easter groceries.

Grace Way Recovery Residence for Women's says it is one of their ways of saying thank you to their generous community and to inform them of their mission.

"The Easter shoppers that are here are loading up groceries. They've got, they're busy. They've got a lot of plans, but they're not too busy to stop and shake hands and meet one of our faces of recovery, meet a volunteer and they're being so generous," said Liz Dixon, Grace Way Recovery Residence Executive Director.

Buckets were set at each check out and outside the store's door for anyone willing to make a donation to the non-profit organization.

Each dollar donated goes directly to Grace Way, where women are working and recovering from substance abuse and addiction.

"It helps women recover from drug and alcohol addiction and to get our lives back on track and really this is life or death for a lot of us. So it's saving a lot of our lives," said Adriana Zellner, Grace Way resident and volunteer.

The Easter Bunny also made sure to stop by to help customers color eggs and get their faces painted in celebration.

But Grace Way says it's the spirit and true meaning of Easter that made today's event so successful.

"It's particularly appropriate during Easter, that this resurrecting power that we believe in is here and is manifested in the generosity of these shoppers here, that really want to help. One woman, one checkout, one bag at a time," said Dixon.

The hope is that today's first time event provided more awareness and support for the organization to keep growing.

Donations can be made at Winn Dixie until April 2nd.

Grace Way Recovery Residence for Women encourages anyone interested in getting involved to contact their offices in downtown Albany.
