New technology expected to help farmers

TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture, Gary Black made a stop in South Georgia today to talk about new technology for farmers in South Georgia.

This new tool to save farmers time and money is in the works. It's called the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. It's designed to detect crop stress and disease.

"Every time farmers has a chance to adopt a new tool and it makes them more productive that's good for our citizens and rural communities and for our whole state," said Gary Black.

In the last few weeks, crops in South Georgia have been hit hard with flooding and cold weather. Commissioner Black is optimistic that farmers in our area will bounce back.

"Farmers will do what they always do. They'll re-plant and they'll pull themselves up," said Gary Black.

While this agriculture application is not widely used just yet, Innovators do not want that to stop farmers from embracing this new tool.

"Georgia is a place that adopts new technology. Agriculture is our largest industry in the state and we support new technology and new ideas," said Donnie Smith.

They hope with this new product, it will allow farmers compete with bigger farms in the state of Georgia.

The UAV is still in the planning stage and will make its debut at the Sunbelt Expo this summer.
