ASHBURN, GA (WALB) -

Turner County Elementary was First Lady Sandra Deal's last stop this month for her Read Across Georgia Initiative.

After reading a children's book by a Georgia author and illustrator, the First Lady told students to practice reading with their families and to continue reading during school breaks.

Deal says the initiative is for students to learn and help them become successful members of Georgia communities.

"We're trying to make sure children all over the state know how important reading is. We don't want to leave anybody out. We want every child in this whole state to be able to read and to be successful,"said Deal.

The plan for the initiative was for the First Lady to read to at least one school in each of Georgia's 180 school systems.

If she is not able to stop by all of them in the next month or two, she plans to continue the readings next year.
