Five years after the murder of Lucious Buchanan in Dawson, Police and GBI agents announced an arrest. Buchanan's murder shocked the town of Dawson.

After years of failed leads, Investigators finally got information that led them to Derrick Smith. He's being held in Lee county, and will soon go before a judge in Terrell County to face murder charges.

GBI agents and Dawson Police say Lucious Buchanan's killer will return to Terrell County in two weeks and answer to charges in his 2008 murder.

"It just took us a while to get this solved, but between us and the GBI it worked out," said Investigator Gene Shattles. Buchanan was shot inside his home five years ago, His daughter discovered her father's body.

"I remember riding by on patrol and he was out planting his flowers and you would see him and he would wave everyone knew him and everyone was shocked he had been shot and was deceased," said the detective. "He was very well known in the community and he has been pretty much a lifelong resident of Dawson."

That's when the GBI and Dawson PD launched an in depth investigation and search for his killer. With the case occurring in 2008, the majority of leads came in at that time.

"It did go flat for a while, we got to a point where but more leads came in recently and we started doing more interviews and it led to Mr smiths arrest," said Kim Baker of the GBI.

Thanks to the publics help, they've gotten the evidence needed to take out warrants for Derrick Smith's arrest.

"He was charged with felony murder, murder aggravated assault and armed robbery," said Baker.

Although nothing will bring Lucious Buchanan back, the arrest gives family members some closure.

The GBI along with the Dawson police department have been in contact with the family during the entire investigation and of course they are happy that someone has been identified as being responsible for their family member. GBI agents say Smith and Buchanan did know one another, but would not go into details about their relationship or a possible motive.

Dawson Police also need help solving another cold case. Forty-one year old Walter Bell was found dead in his backyard on First Avenue in 2011.

If you have any information on this case, call the Georgia Bureau of Investigation or the Dawson Police Department.
