VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

The Lowndes County Children's Advocacy Center kicks off its 17th annual blue ribbon campaign to raise awareness for April's Prevent Child Abuse Month.

Today, city and county leaders placed 957 pinwheels on the front lawn of City Hall.

Each pinwheel represents a child reported abused or neglected in Lowndes County last year.

The pinwheel project started in Lowndes County and went nationwide in 2008.

"We hope to provide prevent efforts in the community, to bring education and awareness to child abuse, but also to provide treatment to children who have been abused so we can help them to become healthy citizens," said Social Services Coordinator, Sandra Wilcher.

The Children's Advocacy Center supports children suspected of suffering from neglect and sexual, physical, and emotional abuse.
