Two arrested in storage unit burglaries

QUITMAN, GA (WALB) -

Two Quitman men are in jail tonight charged with breaking into storage units and stealing people's belongings.

Quitman police say nearly a dozen units were burglarized over the past week. They even found some of the items on Craig's List. WALB News Ten's Lydia Jennings tells us how the men were caught.

A traffic stop Tuesday afternoon at this storage unit led to the arrest of David Nellis for DUI. But Quitman police also charged him with burglarizing the same storage unit after they found tools in his car they say he used to break into the units.

"What's the chances of a pair of bolt cutters being in a van that was at the storage units that's been burglarized," said Quitman Police Chief, Wesley Ross.

Tyrone Thomas was also arrested for the burglary and police expect more charges to come and more arrests to be made. Ross says the men were stealing anything they could get their hands on, then reselling the items on Craig's List.

"Anything from clocks to chairs to huge air conditioners, vacuum systems; just anything that was in the storage unit," said Ross.

Police say the men were coming in the middle and used a bolt cutter like this to get inside.

The owner of Safe Storage says its hard to live up to the name after crimes like this.

"It's pretty bad for our business because we're a service oriented business, and the name of our company is Safe Storage so we want to keep it as safe as possible," said Jack Pridgen.

The men stole about $50,000 worth of property. Police are in the process of returning most of it to the owners.

"They think they're having a safe storage unit to protect their valuables, then you have people like this come through and take from other people and it's not good for the community or anybody," said Pridgen, who hopes to install security systems in the future.

The men are in the Brooks County jail tonight. Police say they didn't work alone, and they expect to make more arrests soon.
