ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Thursday morning, state lawmakers are gearing up for what's expected to be a very busy day under the gold dome as they try to nail down a series of major issues  that remain unresolved. The biggest of those issues is the state budget.

House and Senate negotiators seem to be close on agreeing to the $19.8 billion budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1st.

That budget is crucial to the lives of many Georgians, especially here in southwest Georgia. That budget helps to fund education for about two million students across the state. It also helps provide health care for more than 1.6 million people.

But the two chambers have continued to use the budget almost as a bargaining chip for other issues like restricting lobby spending in an on-going ethics reform, loosening gun laws, and an abortion coverage plan for state employees.

House members are expected to start the busy day at 9:30 Thursday morning. Senate members start at 10:00 A.M.

Any bills not approved by the House and Senate by midnight automatically fail for the year.
