Berrien Co. toddler drowns in pond

BERRIEN CO., GA (WALB) -

A Berrien County family is urging parents to teach their toddlers how to swim after their child died over the weekend from drowning. WALB News Ten's Lydia Jennings spoke to the family and gives you some tips on swimming safety.

It only takes a minute for a toddler to slip away and find water. For the Bynum family, their 19-month-old grandson, Troy, found his way to a koi fish pond behind their Enigma home Saturday night. They found him minutes later, but it was too late.

"We should have had a fence around it. Which I never even dreamed that he'd go to the pond because he never messed around with it," said father, Tommy Bynum.

Bynum and responding officer Enigma Police Chief Arel Valdez both preformed CPR. Troy was taken to Tift Regional then flown to Macon Hospital, but did not survive.

"Everybody loved Troy. Somebody was always with Troy. That's why its hard for us to understand why in just a matter of a second, he's gone," said mother, Shannon.

The Bynum's say they hope other parents realize how important water safety is.

"Put a fence around it, or teach them how to swim, because I'd hate for anybody to have to go through this," said Bynum.

And now, babies as young as six months are learning to swim; and most importantly how to save themselves from drowning.

"What we aim for is for them to have a good experience in the water, start with the swimming, start with the floating on the back," said Valdosta YMCA Program Director, Randy Gaytan.

During survival swimming, children are taught to flip over and float on their backs if they're not confident they can make it to the edge of the pool. And to prevent drowning there are safety measures parents can take.

"There are door alarms, pool alarms, a little alarm you can put on a child's wrist and it senses if it gets into the water," said Gaytan.

The Bynum's say swimming lessons will be required for their next two grandbabies on the way.

Swimming lessons are given all year around at the YMCA, contact your local Y to sign up.
